Choosing the right tractor size is one of the most important decisions you'll make for your farming operation. The wrong size can lead to inefficiency, increased costs, and frustration. Here's what you need to know.
The size of your farm is the primary factor in determining tractor size. For farms under 50 acres, a compact tractor (20-40 HP) is usually sufficient. Medium farms (50-200 acres) typically need utility tractors (40-100 HP), while larger operations require row crop tractors (100+ HP).
Your tractor needs enough power to efficiently operate your implements. As a general rule, you need about 20-25 HP per foot of cutting width for mowers, and 35-50 HP per bottom for plows.
Consider your farm's growth potential. It's often better to buy slightly more tractor than you currently need rather than outgrowing it quickly.
